strange screen freezes on built-in monitor of Framework 13

In my minimalist xmonad setup, some basic applications, notably xterm and emacs, have an issue where while I'm typing the screen will freeze at some point until I move the mouse.  It apparently is some sort of issue where the screen is failing to refresh because I can type arbitrary amounts of stuff, open or close windows, etc., and nothing changes on screen until I move the mouse and then it refreshes and everything I typed appears as I would expect.  Sometimes opening or closing a window can also get the refresh to happen, but sometimes not.  Moving the mouse or switching xmonad desktops reliably trigger the refresh.  Clicking without moving it does not work.

Cannot reproduce on external monitor.
Cannot reproduce in firefox, even when using a text edit box trying to specifically mimic the problem activity.
Cannot reproduce in GNOME, which I installed for the sole purpose of testing a “normal” environment, even when using the same apps (emacs, xterm).

I could not find any error messages that seemed at all related using dmesg or journalctl.

I tried messing with the BIOS settings related to iGPU, but nothing made any difference.

I updated firmware to current version of 4.2; all the above-mentioned testing happened on this version.  It's also persisted through multiple kernel updates; this is actually my second attempt at debugging the issue; I also tried when I first noticed it after buying the laptop back in March.  (I mainly use the laptop while traveling, so motivation to troubleshoot comes and goes, but I have a trip coming up for which it would be nice to have it working!)

I have thoroughly read the AW page for this laptop, especially the troubleshooting section, and tried a few things but nothing seems relevant.  I've also tried a few web searches with different wordings, but it's hard to avoid being swamped with issues that are actually quite different, mainly screen tearing/flickering and crashes.

This one actually sounds like the same issue, but got no replies:

Any help is appreciated, even just advice on how to think about the problem since I'm pretty stumped!

Re: strange screen freezes on built-in monitor of Framework 13

Update: setting this kernel parameter (which I found from other vaguely related Framework 13 troubleshooting threads) seems to maaaaaybe have fixed it, or at least I can't reproduce as easily.  I will report back after testing more thoroughly
