Give us more information. First, is your Xorg set-up correctly? Which command did your issue to start XFCE4 / what is the content of your ~/.xinitrc? What graphics-board with which driver. What did you do to install XFCE4? With this informations we are more able to help you.
Other than that leat me point something out: this was a "stupid" question. Not because the problem would not be worth the question or that answer would be trivial but because a lot of important information is not given. To improve the qualitity of your posts read http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html and http://perl.plover.com/Questions.html for pointers. Good luck with Arch and have fun on the revamped BBS. ![]()

-yeah, my xorg is fine, because i have used kde before
-i use kdm to start xfce4
-there is no .xinitrc in my home folder
-i use vesa driver
-to install i use pacman -Sy xfce4
And i think this not a stupid question. Next time try to be a little more polite with the users.

I'm assuming you have xorg set up. Try running the X command and see if it works. If it does then that is good, if it doesn't then well read the wiki page on setting up xorg and pray.
It might be a problem with kdm. What does startxfce4 do? If startxfce4 doesn't work then you have a big problem. Since you are using kdm, the contents of your .xsession are probbably what you need, (for xdm anyways) I don't know about kdm well though. First find out if it is a kdm problem.
I will agree that this is not a stupid question, But we are not mind readers, so if you explain your problem in the utmost detail smart people will be able to figure it out much easily.
For example all my questions in this post are asking for more information, so maybe if you provide more then my post would be the solution to your problem rather than asking more questions and then everyone is happpy. ^_^
I mean, if you don't mind nobody being able to fix the problem for you feel free to post a one line question. But if you want your problem solved then...

you may try to start xfce with a different user to check if it works.

The easiest way to check if it is a problem with XFCE4 is to disable kdm and use 'startxfce4' from the console. If this works kdm needs to be set up properly. Soooo... does that work, then?
Of course it was not stupid, hence the "quotation marks".
My politeness does not lie in spoon-feeding people but to give them pointers in the right direction. Be more verbose if you want help! ![]()

I agree. That first post was not very telling. For us to solve a problem, we must have the correct "parameters" involved.

In case it isn't solved yet - I deleted ~/.gtk* files and it worked for me.
