My guess is either they don't use their own product, or they've gotten used to its "quirks" and see no issue anymore

Run thunderbird via systemd user unit and use:

TemporaryFileSystem=/home/username/Thunderbird

Glad you found the cause and got it solved upstream. This is a useful finding, especially since the profile remains correctly located in `~/.thunderbird` while the empty `~/Thunderbird` directory keeps getting recreated. It would be great to know which upstream fix resolved it, in case other users run into the same issue.
