Run thunderbird via systemd user unit and use:
TemporaryFileSystem=/home/username/ThunderbirdOffline
This was finally fixed in Thunderbird 154.0

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Glad you found the cause and got it solved upstream. This is a useful finding, especially since the profile remains correctly located in `~/.thunderbird` while the empty `~/Thunderbird` directory keeps getting recreated. It would be great to know which upstream fix resolved it, in case other users run into the same issue.
