From Steam: Red Alert 2 shutdown in a long mission

Hi,

I'm running it in plain mode. I tried Experimental, 11, 10, and 9, but it works best in plain mode.

After completing a long task or two tasks, it suddenly shuts down on its own. How can we investigate this?

EDIT: I think there was a change in the plain version, or maybe there was a graphics/lag issue before that as well.
After playing for about 1–2 hours, the game froze, but the sound kept playing. The cursor moved erratically, and the screen was frozen. Then the game shut down on its own.

i dont have or use steam but i play ra2 yuris revenge all the time using cncnet launcher through wine, most of the time it works perfectly but occasionally it slows down and becomes unplayable and im pretty sure has frozen with the sound still playing like you describe, its just part of playing ra2, you get used to it, im old enough to remember playing lan games back in 2002 where the exact same thing would happen so its nothing new, the game engine is just prone to it i guess, we used to get so angry when we were over an hour into a match and had to call it off due to slowness or a crash.... still the best game ever imo

In other words; when the screen almost freezes, and after the cursor starts moving very slowly, the sound keeps playing—yes—but then the game shuts down on its own after 2–3 seconds.
I was able to play for 1-2 hours before closing off. How about you ? And I'm choosing the standard game option instead Yuri version or both. Will be any differ ?

EDIT: I am suspicious about some GPU problem. Because 1050 Ti should'nt be on turbo mode for Red Alert 2 but it is. And after alt + tab, the menu/buttons in the game (new game/load game/credentials/exit) just disappears.

Re: From Steam: Red Alert 2 shutdown in a long mission

your playing a game from 2001 in 2026 on hardware and OS thats vastly different, you have to expect issues, also as i said even back in 2002 with win xp machines we still had issues.
if this is happening every game for you then steam is obviously doing somthing wrong, i might have a crash or slowdown 1 in 20-30 games.
maybe you should try using the cncnet launcher with wine instead, you just need the .mix files which will be somewehere in the steam folder structure.
i use the cnc_ddraw renderer at 1920x1080 and it works perfectly most of the time.

create a new wine prefix and use winetricks to install dotnet48 and xna40 then install cncnet.

im not going into details further than that, theres plenty of info out there.

and lastly ill say im using an old version of wine-valve and and old version of cncnet (8.64.1) , i got sick of updates and breakages and my current setup works perfectly so why change it, i also have it all inside an nspawn container but thats purely down to me wanting wine seperate from my main system.
