USB Microphone not working on Pipewire

My USB microphone on pipewire is being weirdly intermittent. Pipewire recognizes the device as a source. It shows up in qpwgraph, but when I try to use it in any program or pipe it to monitor, there is no audio. Yesterday, I followed this (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=307066) forum thread, which seemed to fix it, but its back to not working. I have edited /usr/share/pipewire/pipewire.conf to have

default.clock.rate 441000
default.clock.min-quantum 128

but these don't seem to work. I also wrote the udev rule mentioned, but since deleted it out of concern that it may have been causing an issue. pipewire.socket pipewire.service pipewire-pulse.socket pipewire-pulse.service wireplumber.service are all enabled and running. No amount of restarting units or rebooting seems to have an impact on this, either in making it work or not.

Anything in dmesg/journal/pipewire logs when seeing this error? Are there similar probing errors as in the linked thread? And make sure you're fully up to date, there's been a bunch of USB audio subsystem fixes in 7.2.3 and wireplumber 0.5.17

No relevant logs in any of those places. Wireplumber was on 0.5.17, and updating linux to 7.2.3 did not help. I didn't have any probing issues, but the advice in that thread seemed to be the only thing that fixed it.

Is that really 441000 ? Standard CD sample rate is 44.1 kHz, equals 44100 Hz.

Right that should probably have a zero less, but in any case can you post some more information, does the mic not work in pipewire or not work in ALSA either? If it doesn't work in ALSA you might have kernel troubles. Post wrapped in [code][/code] tags

I have also updated all packages to current and restarted multiple times since opening this thread, including this evening, to no avail.

also also I just changed my default sample rate to 44.1kHz, which also did nothing

You need to define the source of recording (the USB microphone). By default the sound server capture the audio from your main sound card, from the P1 input source of the motherboard if it exits.

Try using audacity to select the USB input source to check if the microphone is working. If it works fine, then you need to change the default input source for recording, using alsa tools or pavucontrol.

I've been primarily testing it with discord and audacity, with defined sources. But in the past, using the system default also worked fine.

Yes this setting will/should stick. some clients might to do funky stuff they have no business touching but you'd have to check that when it occurs again. If it "randomly" cut during a call, do you maybe have a physical button that can toggle this state or so and might have accidentally pressed it? Otherwise this has inklings of role ducking, but that's not enabled by default on wireplumber afaik.
