AMD GPU hangs specifically during H.264 video encoding

Hello,

I’m trying to troubleshoot an issue where H.264 video encoding consistently causes my AMD GPU to hang and reset. The problem appears to be limited ONLY to H.264 encoding. H.264 decoding works normally. HEVC encoding and decoding work normally. Vulkan applications work normally.

Underclocking the GPU did not make any difference.

The encoding is being performed with FFmpeg. In 5-30 seconds after starting an H.264 encode, the GPU hangs and the kernel resets it. These are the relevant log messages:

Sep 18 01:28:04 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: ring vce0 timeout, signaled seq=63, emitted seq=64
Sep 18 01:28:04 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: Process ffmpeg pid 4553 thread ffmpeg:cs0 pid 4554
Sep 18 01:28:04 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: GPU reset begin!. Source: 1
Sep 18 01:28:08 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: failed to suspend display audio
Sep 18 01:28:08 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: suspend of IP block <vce_v3_0> failed -22
Sep 18 01:28:08 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: GPU pre asic reset failed with err, -22 for drm dev, 0000:01:00.0
Sep 18 01:28:08 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: BACO reset
Sep 18 01:28:08 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: GPU reset succeeded, trying to resume
Sep 18 01:28:08 arch kernel: amdgpu 0000:01:00.0: VRAM is lost due to GPU reset!

The "ring vce0 timeout" message seems to indicate that the VCE encoding engine is timing out. Since other GPU functions work correctly, I'm wondering whether this could be related to the VCE firmware, the kernel/amdgpu driver, FFmpeg, or an incompatibility with this particular GPU.

What would be the best way to diagnose this further?

Re: AMD GPU hangs specifically during H.264 video encoding

I don't have any problems encoding in H.264 (RX 5700XT).
There have been some issues with the AMD firmware lately; try updating the system and updating GRUB (# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg)

Re: AMD GPU hangs specifically during H.264 video encoding

I have the same problem rx 580. it can happen in 5 min, it can happen in 2 hours. HEVC doesn't appear to have the same issue.
