I installed everything manually in my new desktop, but when i rebooted the grub didn't show up and i went straight to my windows partition, I first thought that I messed up something when installing grub, but i wiped the partition i used for arch and re-installed it using the archinstall script, and had the same problem.
i disabled fast start up and secure boot before installing arch, so I don't knew what is the cause of this, my laptop works just fine

What laptop model exactly? Some vendors don't allow writing NVRAM variables unless you do a UEFI config raindance, some don't allow that at all and require e.g. the --removable flag so that the default UEFI path gets populated.
Offline
side note: --removable doesn't work with dual-boot windows because windows keeps overwriting whatever is in <ESP>\EFI\BOOT\BOOT[arch].EFI
hoever you could try the other way around: chain grub from the windows bootloader - but for how to do i recommend the msdn
Offline
I didn't understand the last thing you said, but i have seen something about this --removable flag when i looked up my problem.
the laptop that i installed arch in , and the one i am writing from right now , is thinkpad t470, specifically the 20HDS1DL03
the desktop pc i was trying to install in it has ryzen 5 5500 with nvidia 5050
if you think that the windows bootloader something you mentionned is going to solve this give me a link to some page or video on how to set it up, and can you explain what is the cause of this.
Thank you.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GRUB#D … _boot_path but I don't think thinkpads fall into that category but they've a "Boot Order Lock" UEFI setting that you need to disable.
What is the output of
efibootmgr --unicodeand how exactly did you install grub?
i wiped the partition i used for arch and re-installed it using the archinstall script
Avoid the script to retain control over the process, but also the bootloader doesn't live on the system partition but the ESP.
Offline
i used the script to make sure that i didn't mess up something, and the problem is from the desktop, when i installed arch manually i used these commands:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --bootloader-id=GRUB --efi-directory=/boot/efi (i mounted the esp to /mnt/boot/efi)
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
i made sure to install os-prober and uncomment the last line in /etc/default/grub
for the command you ask for:
efibootmgr --unicode

i never knew that there is such an option in the first place, there was no problem the first time i installed it so I didn't investigate my system further

I don't know what it does there, I log to my windows parition normally.
i will try to change the grub config location in the esp as the wiki says and see if it works for me.

How did you manage to boot Arch? Can you boot "GRUB" from the BIOS?
efibootmgr shows Boot0002 (GRUB) as first entry in BootOrder. That seems ok. Is the GRUB menu visible? Is line
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
active in /etc/default/grub? Temporarily set "GRUB_TIMEOUT=<seconds>" to a higher value.

yes it shows normally, and i can change the order from bios also if i want to boot windows without going through grub, if using it, i can select between arch and windows.
Is the GRUB menu visible?
yes?
Is line GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu active in /etc/default/grub?
also yes
Temporarily set "GRUB_TIMEOUT=<seconds>" to a higher value
it is set to 5 seconds, and i think that's plenty enough for me.

grub doesn't show up
???
What is actually the problem then?
Offline
Ohhh, i thought you were asking about the grub in my laptop, the desktop pc (where grub doesn't work) where i installed arch recently is the one that suffers from this problem
Offline
OK, forget your laptop.
I assume your PC isn't a thinkpad either, so you might want to clarify that ![]()
Also the efibootmgr output is from the laptop?
We'll need that from the desktop - you can run it from the install iso.

Isn't there a GRUB entry in the BIOS of your
desktop pc (where grub doesn't work)
?
Offline
no, nothing
Offline
no, nothing
If your desktop PC has UEFI, the Arch installer may have failed to write the boot entry on nvram. You can try creating a boot entry in the BIOS, but name it something like "test" instead of GRUB. Then, locate (navigate to) the file EFI/GRUB/grubx64.efi on your ((( laptop's - post edit: desktop's ))) hard drive. If this is successful, you should be able to boot Arch and try to create the correct boot entry by "grub-install ..." (check Wiki).

ummm, i fear there isn't a file named grubx64.efi in the EFI/GRUB/ directory

Boot the install iso on the desktop and post the output of "efibootmgr --unicode" and the contents of the ESP and the installations boot partition.

Boot the install iso on the desktop ...
When you boot from iso you could also check in /etc/fstab on the installed root partition (mount it to a temporary mount point) whether the EFI partition mount point is correct. I suspect it wasn't mounted correctly during installation.

I went and installed arch for the third time, this time manually, this is efibootmgr output

MicrosoftI didn't understand what you meant by the installation boot partition, can you clarify?
could also check in /etc/fstab on the installed root partition
the contents of fstab are the same as the partitions i used : nvme0n1p1 the esp mounted to /efi
nvme0n1p4 the root partition

The boot order currently is the KIOXIA TransMemory PMAP (current boot, likely the installation usb key), then Windows Boot Manager, GRUB is last - you'll have to change that.
If that's not possible, try the --removable installation.
I didn't understand what you meant by the installation boot partition, can you clarify?
/mnt/boot if you use a boot partition.
Offline
the /boot directory:
amd-ucode.img grub initramfs-linux.img vmlinuz-linuxthe problem is that i don't see any option for the grub when i enter the bios , that why i couldn't change it, when i just finished the installation and before rebooting it was the first one according to efibootmgr, but it booted windows instead as i said in the start
try the --removable installation.
ok.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unifie … efibootmgr
"To set the boot order"
But it might indeed not be supported by the BIOS - we still lack details on that, btw.

nothing changed, the same result
