Ati-fglrx problem.

Hello.

I've just started using Arch and i really like it. Very clean and efficient.

I do have a problem however, with the ati-fglrx.
I have a radeon X1600 video card. After i've installed xorg and did hwd to make a xorg.conf everything works fine.
Then i install ati-fglrx with pacman, add fglrx to the modules line in rc.conf. Then i let aticonfig modify the xorg.conf.
When i start xorg, the screen goes black and the system halts. I've tried some example xorg.confs and modified them to my system, but all with the same outcome.

When i remove ati-fglrx with pacman and start xorg, it works again.
Also, using lsmod fglrx is in the list.

I have the same problem with my X1300 Pro. It's an issue with the driver itself. I had the same problem with this driver version (8.33) on Ubuntu (manual install). Driver version 8.32 (8.28 also) works fine.

Is it possible to install an older version through pacman? Or does anyone have a good step-by-step tutorial for manual installation on Arch?

Yeah it does seem like a driver bug, aticonfig can't make a proper xorg.conf for whatever reason. I had trouble using 'Xorg --configure" as well.

You can uncomment the DRI line but DRI doesn't seem to be working with the current fglrx driver (at least not with my ancient 256MB Radeon 9800 Pro

I believe i will also try to install kernel 2.6.20 and ati-fglrx version 8.33.6-3. And if it doesn't work maybe wait for the new ati drivers that are supposed to be coming this month.

I'm considering just using the xorg open source drivers. I don't play video games, but I do need some sort of 3d rendering capability.

AFAIK, the problem is with the new line of chipsets (X1300/X1600/X1900). The driver has a lot of flaws. And the open source alternative (ati/radeon drivers) doesn't work. Options? fglrx or vesa...

It's too bad and once again one has to advise Linux users to stay away from ATI as far as they can...

I think the problem is the modelines in your xorg.conf. I had the same problem with modelines too.
If you don't need them: you're lucky, just remove them
If you need them (Like I do for a custom resolution): There are again 2 options:
- Use an old fglrx (8.29.6 is the last working version with modelines). I'm afraid this is not a good solution however as I think this driver will stop working with xorg 7.2
- Use opensource drivers (luckily they work acceptable for a radeon 9600)
