DayZ (via Steam) not using all resources and FPS round about 30-ish

Hello folks,

I like playing DayZ for a long time. I still love the game and play it on my laptop with an eGPU via Thunderbolt (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060). I have some kind of bottleneck that I cannot grasp. Hopefully someone might know how to exploit the bottleneck to the max.

What have I done so far?

* Steam via flatpak. Some time ago the pacman-installation did not want to work.
* gamemode is working and showing two processes (srt-bwrap    and    reaper). Are they all that might be needed?
* vm.max_map_count = 1048576

So, what more can I do to get better results?

Thank you in advance!

Cheers!

Flatpak installs are very dependant on properly synchronized graphics libs, so if you had a recent update that updated e.g. the nvidia drivers, you also need to make sure the nvidia layer on flatpak is at the same version, otherwise you're limited to a software renderer.

Also check with mangohud or so (afaik gamemode has a flag to inject it) that you are actually running on the eGPU. What other environment? Which desktop/compositor?

Thank you for the tips!

I am sorry that I gave some wrong info. Just checked the Flathub and saw that the new Nvidia drivers were not installed. Apparently, Steam was not installed there either, so this should not be an issue.

'Nvidia-smi' gives me the info that the eGPU is having the load of the game. Still: CPU never over 50% on any core and the GPU not over 50% either, while DayZ is a real CPU hungry game with an old engine.

If I could only make it use more of the CPU but it never even takes one core to 100%, while I have 32GB RAM which is far more than enough.

Re: DayZ (via Steam) not using all resources and FPS round about 30-ish

Hello,

I tend to get amused with myself if I forget I forgot to "put sand" in the "sandbox". Mind that I started with Operation Flashpoint back in 2001 and have played a few variants since then.  Actually have Exile mod on ArmA 3, with a few mod added.  My current aggravation is not having a POSIX compliant graphical PBO management tool that is maintained. Though I am fully aware that Dev's trample off to do other things, and appreciate what they provide. Steam provides a lot as well. It can be "entertaining" as now and then there's change I try to find out at what point did something break. Need to resolve a few things in the XM8, and update it to provide the Teamspeak address for my guests. Also attempting to provide a simple to follow visual tutorial on how to use a mod called "ArmA 3 Command" using OBS Studio. But I digress, and merely taking a break from finding a simple to use PBO GUI.  lol
Detriment is it being a portable form factor as it is a challenge is thermal transfer/air flow. i.e. <humor> user places device on be forgetting air intake is on the bottom. </humor>
