I've published pila-git on the AUR. pila is a stacking Wayland compositor written in Rust on Smithay: floating windows with server-side title bars, animations, window rules, workspaces and fractional scaling. Panels and launchers come from the usual tools (waybar, fuzzel,
swaylock), or from a shell such as Noctalia.
It's alpha. I run it daily on Arch with GDM, on an AMD laptop with an external monitor, and that's the only hardware it has seen. Reports from NVIDIA and Intel users would help most, as would other display managers.
To install it:
git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/pila-git.git
cd pila-git
less PKGBUILD
makepkg -sicheck() runs the integration tests, which start headless instances of pila. If they fail on your machine, please tell me; makepkg -si --nocheck skips them.
To try it without installing it, build from the repo and run cargo run --release, which opens it as a window in your current desktop. To test your real hardware, scripts/tty runs it on a spare VT while your session keeps running.
Please send bug reports to GitHub rather than here. Include the output of pila --version and your log (~/.local/state/pila/pila.log for a login session, pila-tty.log for scripts/tty), after removing anything private.
It's developed with AI assistance (Claude Code). I make the design decisions, review the code and answer for it: Use of AI.
