Firefox with flash 9 closes itself in youtube or gmail

Greetings!

I updated to flash 9 sometime around January. Since then, I've been having problems when streaming youtube clips or chatting with gtalk (through firefox). Firefox appears to close itself whenever I have the clip or the gmail page in one tab and try to switch to another tab. Also it happens equally often when I try to go back to the previous page. I believe flash 9 is the culprit since both youtube clips and gtalk use the flash plugin.

I need to stress that firefox doesn't seem to crash, rather it just kills itself. Also, the problem doesn't appear when using opera or when I was using flash 7 (with either firefox and opera). I've looked around in this forum and others, but I didn't come across any thread concerning the problem I'm experiencing.

Any enlightenment on the subject will be greatly appreciated.

Some info,
kernel: 2.6.19.2-1
browser: firefox 2.0.0.1
flashplugin: 9.0.31.0-1

Re: Firefox with flash 9 closes itself in youtube or gmail

this happens to me a lot. flash movies and youtube often kill firefox, but its not a constant thing. a pacman -Syu over the weekend fixed something and it has ran fine all of this week, but previous to this week i had about two weeks of firefox being almost unusable on some forums i read (that often have video clips embedded and youtube embedded) and on youtube.com itself

i have the same things installed as you do, all up-to-date

I keep my computer pretty updated.
Just in case, I've just did an 'Pacman -Syu', but the problem seems to persist.

Anyways, thanks for the input.

Are you using composite ? I had the same problem with previous flash version w/ composite...
There's a workaround here.

Please note that i may be totally off topic with that post big_smile

Nope, I'm not using composite. Just in case, I've checked my xorg.conf and the composite option isn't enabled. So I guess that probably isn't my problem either.

But thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of that specific issue. I'll keep it mind if I enable composite.

Re: Firefox with flash 9 closes itself in youtube or gmail

Just an update of the issue.

I found out that when I run firefox as a root I don't experience the unfortunate problem.
I've checked the permissions for the files in /opt/mozilla/plugins/ , but they are all read and execute enabled for all users.

Any thoughts?

This is what the firefox spits out before killing itself:

/opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-2.0.0.1/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 3446 Segmentation fault      "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

As ithe problem seems to be related to permissions, make sure that your user is in the audio and video groups.

I've just checked, and my user belongs to both the audio and video groups

Same issue here. When I want to see a video through flash, firefox kills itself. Then I restart it, restoring the previous session, and it just works fine...

Re: Firefox with flash 9 closes itself in youtube or gmail

Ok here goes another update...

I found out today that if I removed myself from the audio group I could play clips in youtube (no sound obviously) without crashing!!
It seems that being in the audio group is giving troubles. Just in case, I even double-checked by adding a new user to my box.

Re: Firefox with flash 9 closes itself in youtube or gmail

I had the same problem when i used the alsa-jack plugin as default alsa-device. It's a configuration for alsa to "forward" sound to the jack daemon, which must be running offcourse.  With other programs i didn't have this problem (eg amarok) they would use alsa, and alsa would forward to jack.
But when trying this with flash it kills my firefox.  If i switch back to "normal" alsa it works fine

This happened to me when I was using an IME for inputting chinese text. It had something to do with a bug between Firefox, flash and asound2 I believe.

Re: Firefox with flash 9 closes itself in youtube or gmail

hmm... I'm really confused but somewhat content now.

Yesterday, I upgraded my faad2 (from the stable repo) to faad2-devel (from the unstable repo) since I was having some trouble with mpd and moc not being able to find some libs. For more more info check:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29054

Well, weird thing is that tonight I found out that firefox seems to be working fine with flash big_smile and all that. As I said, I'm confused. I thought that faad2 was just the AAC audio decoder. I might be wrong but I thought it doesn't have anything to do with the flash plugins and our firefox crashing issue.

Anyway, so far it seems to be working fine. Has anyone solved the problem with an similar update?
