Just wondering about 64 vs 32 bit distro

As far as I can tell, my 64 bit hardware will still run 32 bit distro and 32 bit apps... If I'm wrong, it won't be the first time, but links would help here.

So, if I'm really struggling to get 64 bit Arch (or any 64 bit distro) running, I could instead just get the more popular 32 bit Arch, is that right?
