md5 checksum of an ISO burned to CD - SOLVED

How do I get the md5 checksum of an ISO image (e.g. a Linux live distro) after it has been burned to a CD-R?

I've tried 'md5sum /dev/cdrom' and 'md5sum /dev/sr0', both as user and as root.  Rarely, this has worked and given me the correct checksum off the disc.  On other occasions I got an incorrect checksum even when Nerolinux (my burning program) had verified the disc.  But most of the time I get an I/O error after several minutes of reading the CD.
