HAL problems :(

Hi,
HAL doesn't seem to auto mount CD's or DVD's. I've tried many ways of
solving this problem, but none of them worked. Sometimes it happens
though that HAL auto mounts but this happens when a CD or DVD is in
the drive(only sometimes) when the system is booting. When I run dmesg to
check for possible problems I get this:

hdc: DMA timeout retry
hdc: timeout waiting for DMA
hdc: DMA timeout retry
hdc: timeout waiting for DMA

I'm really confused because usb sticks are mounted immediately.

Re: HAL problems :(

isn't hal just an abstraction layer? auto-mounting is done by (higher-level) tools (that may or may not use hal)

Re: HAL problems :(

yes i know,
i'm using gnome-volume-manager to do the mounting stuff, but for it to work
HAL must detect things you know.

Re: HAL problems :(

No idea ?

I have quite the same problem but :

Automount always work for cds and dvds.
Automount work for usb stick when plugged in before booting.
Thunar don't detect my usb stick when plugged in during a xfce session (but sda appears in /dev).

It worked some weeks ago. I don't know what has changed...

Re: HAL problems :(

I've found I have to insert and re-insert USB sticks a few times these days for them to automount in gnome/nautilus.  Not sure if ths is HAL's fault, but does seem to coincide with the recent update (a few weeks ago, I think).  Anyone else find this or know what might be the cause?
