No sound with Intel HD audio [solved]

Hi,

I recently set up my laptop with archlinux, and I'm getting no sound. I have the drivers for my chip installed, there is nothing unusual in dmesg, and alsamixer detects the card fine, but even after I unmute the card, I get nothing. when I start up kde, I get this message:

Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

It may be as simple as making /dev/dsp a symbolic link to the correct device, but I'm not sure which device that would be.

alsamixer tells me:

Card: HDA Intel
Chip:SigmaTel STAC9221 A1

Thanks in advance.

That did it, thanks, I ran that command as you asked, and initially got an error message trying to run alsamixer as a regular user, but upon logging back in... kde has rather impressive startup noises.
