System hangs on booting

Hello,

first of all, I'm new here.. so hi!
This is the second time I'm installing arch, but now I've ran into some problems.

Install went fine, I installed gnome+gdm, editted the /etc/inittab to startx automatically and installed Xorg & my ati drivers.
The thing is, when I boot, all goes fine until (I guess..) X has to be loaded.. the screen goes black and the strange thing is..
I can't hit ctrl+alt+f1/2 etc or ctrl+alt+backspace to get back to console.

Now I'm quite lost how to fix this if I'm not even able to get back to the console.
Any help would be greatly aprecciated!:)

Kevin

Re: System hangs on booting

What is your system setup? ATI? ATI X700?

Re: System hangs on booting

What else? What does your xorg.conf look like? etc.. There are many different things that it could be you need to provide enough information to track down the issue. The black screen is notorious with ATI for improper xorg or missing just one line in xorg (X700). What drivers (open or closed) are you using? What is your .xinitrc file asking? etc. Maybe even post you Xorg.log file. Please we need information not just this doesn't work.

Re: System hangs on booting

Well, my xorg.conf is the default configured by the  Xorg -configure  command, except I've exchanged 'vesa' for 'fglrx' as the driver specified. I've installed ati-fglrx. I don't know what you mean by .xinitrc.. and I can't post my Xorg.log file because I can't access the console.
That's the strangest issue, I can't get back to console..

Re: System hangs on booting

Did you try editing your boot options to boot single user?

Re: System hangs on booting

Append single to boot options. (No you are not stupid, that is why I removed my earlier discouraging comments. In fact what I say could be wrong! This has been the case quite often....) Append it on the line that has all the stuff like ro or rw and /dev/sd* etc..

Re: System hangs on booting

Cool now we just need to get it set up properly so that you can use the driver you want. I haven't used the closed source driver in a long time but if it hasn't changed to much you need to make sure you have run something like aticonfig and anticonfig --initial Xv or something I would look in

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … Kernel_2.6

and see what comes up.

Then post if it still won't work with fglrx. I personally use the open source and notice no difference except I can use the aiglx with xorg instead of installing XGL.
