Just wait a couple of days/weeks/months and we will have it in our great repos..

I am sure we'll have packages in repo before e17 is out

The new fonctionnality seems to be the management of OpenPGP and SSH directly in mail / documents.

mmm well, it is not yet released on the gnome ftp server. The release notes usually appear on the gnome site some time before the release.
That said, most (if not all) packages for the upcoming release are already released so I assume it will be on the ftp server in some hours from now.

Surely OT, but can you please explain, how this works exactly (I mean the interaction between these programs)? I'd also would like to know, how digitally signing documents works with Seahorse, because I was thinking about using it outside of Gnome (or is it especially integrated into the Gnome environment?).

It's caching the key, so you don't have to retype the password every time you encrypt something (if you use gnome-keyring).
With that, encrypting something is just one-click-away. By something, I mean:
- a file with Nautilus
- some text on web page with Epiphany
- Encrypting/Signing the mails with Evolution
- your jabber conversation with Gajim

I already have packages ready that cover 90% of the last RC they released, they run fine with one exception: gnome-panel doesn't keep the panel icons/applets on restarts.

I want to have testing cleaned out a bit first, then I can stuff things into current/extra and/or testing.

Just out of curiosity, why not add gnome releases to testing or unstable when the RCs are out? This way packaging bugs can hopefully be resolved sooner by more testing.

I have to give a presentation about Linux as a Workstation in my company to show
the pros and let they decide about the cons.
I want to demonstrate arch:linux with Gnome 2.18. coz the kiss principe,
the minimalistic environment and the speed!
Works so fast and flawless on a p3 800mhz, 512mb RAM.
324 MB in RAM with: Gnome 2.16, Rhythmbox, Epiphany, Eclipse, Inkscape and OpenOffice opened!
Just Amazing...

I felt in love with arch
Got a nice time with gentoo, but soon, ok you guys know...

But if you had say beryl and gnome 2.16 and didnt want the gnome RC installed it would wipe and remove 2.16 and replace it with 2.18, so putting whole DE's in these repos would cause alot of borken desktops If it was installed alongside however....

The same could be said about xfce-svn but its there. Or am I mistaken

the thing is, that xfce4-svn existed in shadowhand's own repository before he was an arch package maintainer. when he became one, he simply put his whole stuff (xfce4-svn, gaim-svn and so on) into unstable. that's why it's there.

Again OT, but any idea, what the KDE equivalent to Seahorse would be? I am not into encryption by now, and if I should stick with FVWM, I'd like to know what to take from KDE and Gnome to suit my needs... (Just gathering info on apps I may want to use)

I am not a Gnome guy, but I am actually playing around with the Gnome 2.18 Foresight Linux VMware image. Gnome looks quite nice, I very much like the soft GTK+ look, somehow it is just more pleasing to the eye, than the QT3 look. First annoyance is, that it seems not to be possible to maximize a windows vertically / horizontally by right/middle-clicking on the maximize icon in the window titelbar, or can this be configured somehow?

I am curious: Is Gnome 2.18 technologically more advanced then KDE 3.5.6?

I am a longtime KDE user, but lately I am a little annoyed by it, mostly because it seems more and more cluttered. I like the KISS approach, one app for each task, but this seems to be impossible in KDE, leading to more and more software to be installed (there are a lot of examples, like Konqueror being a very nice webbrowser, but it does not place nicely with java/javascript and quite some sites, which means another webbrowser is needed in addition for such problematic sites, or the kioslaves, which allow direct access to network-resources, but do not allow file access without local caching, which made me use fuse in addition, and not to forget about the monolithic KDE packages, which contain a bunch of redundant programs, like two or more image viewers). In the end, KDE becomes overly complicated to handle, and to keep up to date without breaking stuff, which may be one of the reasons, why KDE is often compared with MS Windows. I don't know much about Gnome and its abilities, but as far as I have read, it is more standards compliant, and tries to keep it simple and functional. Some things, like "Project Utopia", come to my mind, because I have read about it somewhere in the past, but it doesn't really tell me anything. Is it that Gnome was first to implement dbus, hal, networkmanager and Bluetooth support? I know that the interaction between programs in Gnome is not like in KDE (KParts), but most programs seem to fit nice together (downside may be Epiphany not being such an advanced webbrowser, and Gnumeric/Abiword not being able to keep up with KOffice).

P.S. Got slightly OT again, but it seems to fit into this thread (not being in the mood to start a new topic over this).

That could be a very long wait, unfortunately. Wish it was already released, but for now I've to choose something to work with (pretty much tried them all, the DEs & WMs, and I like most of them, having now difficulties to decide).
