Dictionary servers and dict: protocol

Hi

I was wondering about adding dictionaries to gnome-dictionary.  I see this uses the dict:/ protocol, and have found a few lists of servers etc.

What I wanted to know about is the lists of dictd-dicts-[lang] packages available for various distros online.  I gather these packages would require running a local dict server?  There seem to be considerably more languages available in these packages than are available in online servers.
Does anyone know if there is a server where these languages are available already?  It seems kind of surprising that the available dict servers wouldn't simply add as many as possible when they're freely available.

Anyway, more a matter of curiosity than necessity, but some enlightenment would be appreciated.

regards,
