My XFCE4.4 desktop does not load anymore after I pacman -Syu'ed.
I have no wallpaper, no icons, and when I click I have no menu.
Has anyone already experienced such an issue ? Any clue ?

Perhaps this is the cause?
I made it long
as I lacked the time to make it short...

run "xfce-setting-show" from console and give xfce control over the desktop.
note:
I don't know the correct (english) names of the menus and buttons cause my xfce is in german...
but it should be something like:
Desktop --> let xfce control the desktop

Well, I restarted dbus, hal etc, rebooted. Yet no improvement is to be seen.
I also checked that xfce is allowed to control the desktop(desktop settings). I exited and saved the session.
However, when I restart Xfce, the desktop does not appear and the box saying "let xfce control the desktop" is unchecked, whereas I did check it before restarting !

Have you tried to check the "let xfce control the desktop" box and not save the session?
edit:
When I check/uncheck this box a message appears. It says something like this:
"If you don't want to let xfce control the desktop after next start save the session."
It's the same message in both cases (check/uncheck).

Unfortunately, the xfce desktop does not appear, whether I do or not save the session...
Furthermore, when I launch it manually (xfdesktop &), there is no effect.
And there is no problem with the libraries, since ldd reports no broken library links.
I did reinstall the whole xfce4, but it didn't help either (altough I rm'ed all my ~/.* stuff related to xfce).
I also tested another wm (fluxbox) which worked out of the box(with xsetroot).
This is driving me mad...
I'm currently investigating the whole startxfce4 script process....

I had the same problem after pacman -Syu today.
Reinstalling whole xfce solved it for me. Before installing again I removed all xfce stuff in ~/.config and /opt.
After first start the panel did not start, I started it manually exited xfce with option save-session and now xfce works again for me.
