XMMS && ALSA and Normal User

I have ALSA installed from base, installed alsa utils and xmms. I can't listen to music as a normal user only as root. How do I go around this?

Are you in the audio group? If not

gpasswd -a <user> audio

will help.

Nope ... this is the error message. It does not work.

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Permission denied

I chowned the file to belong to me ... is this a good security practice?

You should reboot after you executed command above
