I've seen screenshots on several types of mp3 players.
I installed Rythmbox, but its not really low on memory usage. I also got a tip to look up Audacious. On some screens I've seen text based players. Last time I used *nix'es I had a radio on my desk while working on SUN Openlook or just plain vt terminals so I don't really know whats out there.
It would be nice to have a 3-4 line tall terminal with no borders on the desktop root playing my music, and I assume there is a bunch to choose from. I don't need lots of features, just able to play mp3's, and with a basic functionality AND low memory use.
I'd like to hear from you all about what YOU use, how it works and so on.
(EDIT: While I am on it, do suggest some browser thats less hungry on resources then Firefox. How about Swiftfox, Opera and so on?).

moc (mocp) is a nice console music player.
You can also try mpd + ncmpc (and cplay, cmus, ..)
xmms is a light graphical music player (uses winamp skins).
I experience opera being faster then firefox, I like it's features better too... but don't expect a huge performance difference.
As is true for most people I know, I've always loved learning. As is also true for most people I know, I always hated school. Why is that?

thanks, I'll check them out.

Which desktop environment do you use?
If it's kde, try konqueror.

For browsers, well I just switched to swiftfox about a month ago and I'm happy... I assume it's still as resource hungry as firefox though since it's just optimized for specific processors. There are a few other things also.. It drops the font rendering engine pango which is used to render things like foreign text which drops the resources. They also changed a few of the defaults in about:config for faster transmission.
I use to use Opera but I think it's also a resource hog. Great browser though!
I agree, for a small footprint use your DE's browser aka konq or ephipany.

You may also run a console mp3 player in tilda, which by the way is another great application.
I was the one who recommended you audacious. You can't get very much lighter than that, for a gtk application that is...

For mp3s, you could always just use mpg321.
find ~/mp3s -name '*.mp3' > ~/playlist.m3u
mpg321 --random --list ~/playlist.m3u

mpd + ncmpc

Oh, btw, there is this cool little console last.fm player (if you're into that) called shell-fm in the repos. awsome! ![]()
mp3blaster is also in the repos.
A good reason to learn packaging (make your own pkgbuilds) would be to try out playmp3list, newplayer, gamp, ramp.

I use mpg321 combined with a script that I call from my file manager (as an open action). I just doubleclick to start a song, or on a playlist to start a playlist. As for stopping the music, I have bound a command to do it on win+q. Works fine for me.

I'd try ncmpc-svn from aur with mpd.

Thanks all, I try them out

I tried to compile ncmpc-svn, but something is wrong here...:
after makepkg the svn-connection seems to have worked out alright - I have a folder with files, but then:
Checked out revision 4567.
checking for autoconf...
checking for automake 1.6 or later... no
checking for aclocal 1.6 or later... no
You must have automake installed to compile ncmpc.
Download the appropriate package for your distribution,
or get the source tarball at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/
make: *** No rule to make target `distclean'. Stop.
==> SVN checkout done or server timeout
==> Starting make...
./PKGBUILD: line 39: ../ncmpc/configure: No such file or directory
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
==> ERROR: Build Failed. Aborting...
but I do have automake:
root[/var/abs/local/ncmpc-svn]# pp automake
:: automake-1.10-1: is up to date. Upgrade anyway? [Y/n] n
What do I do next?

Maybe you have to add a link to /usr/bin.
[root@x40 cpufreq]# ls -1 /usr/bin/automake*
/usr/bin/automake
/usr/bin/automake-1.10
/usr/bin/automake-1.9Some scripts want automake > 1.6 but only look for versions 1.7, 1.8, 1.9. Same for /usr/bin/aclocal.

No, that doesn't work... ![]()

Hm.
I downloaded it and get the same error. This script works different. It looks only at the first digit of the minor number, so autoconf version 1.10 becomes 1.1.
Solution: Edit Makefile.am:
AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS = foreign 1.1
...Then do a ./configure --with-ncurses and the make. Compiles without problems now.

you can also try out the current revision where this bug is fixed since long:
svn co https://svn.musicpd.org/ncmpc/branches/tradiaz
I'll contact the the package maintainer.

The last revision is not working for me:
Makefile:368: .deps/wreadln.Po: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `.deps/wreadln.Po'. Stop. This happens with the PKGBUILD from AUR and with the PKGBUILD by tradiaz.
