Volume names in Gnome.

Hi all again.

I installed and am now using gnome. On my desktop there's the Home, Computer and Trash icons. Those are ok.

But I also have two HD's which is horribly named, '46.9 GB Volume' and '74.5 GB Volume'. Is there a way to rename those to better names?`I tried to create new desktop icons, naming one 'FILES', and while that looks nice, when I click it to open nautilus, the side pane in Nautilus still show the 'xxx Volume'

It would be nice if I could rename the actual volumes so it says 'FILES' both on desktop and in Nautilus.

They are mounted to my home directory(/dev/hdb1 -> /home/akejo/data for example). For a look at how it shows up check last page in the stickied screenshot thread, I posted a screenie there.

// Thanks

Re: Volume names in Gnome.

If you change the volume label, then it'll display that.  Mine were set in WinXP, so I'm not sure how to do it in Arch, but no doubt a quick google search will enlighten.

Re: Volume names in Gnome.

Thanks.

I did search some in google, and I found tips about label devices in fstab, but thats not really in gnome.. I'll poke around a bit more. Day two in arch, and the system starting to grow on me as I continue tweaking and configuring smile

Yes, fishonadish is right. Gnome will pick up the correct label from the devise if it exists, else it will just call the disk 'XX.X GB Volume' An other solution i guess, colud be to edit /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi, but then you might need to read up on hal. At least to me it's not trivial smile

Re: Volume names in Gnome.

I checked around a little and found a command 'tune2fs -L newlabel /dev/XXXX'

I assume I can use that one, and hope it won't wipe my disk smile

What about for xfs and rieserfs? I have always hated how gnome did this and would love to fix things up a bit. Thanks.
