Gnome 2.18 is out ...

Gnome definitely can look good (just see the monthly screenshots thread), and theme management seems to be a lot easier then in KDE. Good look is not a major factor for me, but I prefer things that come nice right out of the box without too much hassle (Gnome can do, especially the default Tango-based icon theme is much better than any of the KDE icon sets I've seen so far).

Gnome/GTK+ apps are said to be more stable than KDE/QT apps, which I think I have to agree on. While playing with different apps in the Gnome 2.18 VMware image for a while, not a single program crashed so far, which I can not say for my up-to-date KDE installation (Konqueror likes to crash now and then).

I haven't made up my mind yet, if Gnome is more usable for me than KDE, but I really like what I have seen so far. They surely have put some effort into this, see this and this.

I don't know what you mean by "no need with searching programs to make some work". Are you concerned, that you don't find the right programs to work with? I'd say, that's really not any more difficult than for KDE apps, just have a look at Gnomefiles. The quality and quantity of apps should not be an issue for a decision.

Are there hidden apps & features in Gnome 2.18?

Just found the gnome-control-center, which is not enabled in the Desktop menu by default. Didn't see anything mentioned on the Gnome website concerning this feature.

Generally speaking. It's not like in gnome where every QT app I load at start up has like a 50% chance of showing in the system tray or showing it's own tray someplace. After EVERY boot it gets a little annoying. I've never had a problem with a tray Gtk app under Kde. I'm not turning it into a Kde vs Gnome battle, I'm just stating the problems that hold me back from going to Gnome because I really do like Gnome much more than Kde.

I don't if it's a bug or waht but maybe somebody can confirm it.

I usually extracted my files with file-roller by draggin them to the desktop or any folder from file-roller's window but now I can't and the only way is to click in extract.

BTW file-roller looks better

BTW file-roller looks better

Same thing happening here. Although prior to 2.18 I always had to drag the file twice, and it'd extract it the second time, which was odd.

from my experience:

I've never had a problem with a tray Gtk app under Kde

I had my share of it, esp. with pygtk apps (but not only). I also had it the other way around.

whatever, this gnome 2.18 is nice, like a smoothed out 2.14-2.16 which introduced many changes, which made me love gnome again.

I have but one issue: the gnome-power-manager does not show its icon, whatever the relevant setting. I have to 'killall gnome-power-manager && gnome-power-manager' to get it back. somehow I thought it was starting 'too early', since it always showed up after the above. thus I came up with a simple 'sleep 3 && gnome-power-manager' script, which I then added to session startup... still sporadically, it doesn't show, maybe I'll increase the delay a bit again.

EDIT: got a striking idea: removed the delay, and changed g-p-m order to be 60. seems to work so far.

I've got the same problem. That annoys me a bit beacause d&d in file-roller was quite nice thing that I've got accustomed to---even though one needed to wait 'till all files from archive will get unpacked to some temp dir before releasing a button, but that's another story .
