I just installed Arch, but although ifconfig recognizes my ethernet card, pacman consistently (across reboots) returns a "cannot connect" type error for every host. Please help!

Do you have iputils installed?

I installed all by default for BASE and EDITORS. An iputils command does nothing.
(Added): When I say minimal config, I mean that as far as network settings, I only changed my local host name (to ArchPad). Just to be clear, I'm hooked into a wall via an ethernet cable to a good broadband connection.

If all you did was change your host name, you probably have to enter your network settings in rc.conf. Try adding eth0="dhcp" instead of eth0="192.168.0.1 ...... etc."

I'll give that a try. I saw this part in the Beginner's install wiki, but I wasn't positive so I left it alone.

OK that fixed it. Thanks!
I have one other quick question. I'm updating my system now (pacman -Suy) and the hosts are taking ages, perhaps getting me a 400kb package in two minutes. If I have to go at any point (disconnect) can I resume this later? Are there any measures I should take to (a) disconnect safely and/or (b) speed this up? I'm in the US, so the mirror order seems correct (North America at the top).

!! don't use the ftp.archlinux.org mirror as it's being throttled as of late.
1) You can use the rankmirrors script to sort your mirrors based on speed.. search for it in the forums. It's going to be included in pacman 3!
2) you can use the aria2 methods mentioned in the Improve Pacman Performance wiki. I recommend not using the 2 connection per server as it seems kind of abusive. I just started using the pacget script myself and it distributes the load amongst all the servers. Seems to speed things up greatly and is supposed to support resuming.

OK I moved GA tech to the top (where I got my ISO from, which was pretty quick) and ftp.archlinux.org to the bottom for community, release, extra, and current. Thanks for the tip!
