I'm using KDE and when I started audacity, I got the following error:
"Error Initializing Audio: There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will not be able to play or record audio. Error: Host error."
A bit search on the net I found a wiki entry on audacity's official site.

It says I have to disable system sound before starting audacity. The question is how do I disable system sound in KDE? Also, how do I find out which sound system I'm using? Can I assume I'm using ALSA since I have alsa in my init daemon.

You can configure KDE sound to auto-suspend in case no application uses arts any longer. Launch the KDE control center, choose "Sound System" below "Sound & Multimedia". At the bottom of the page you find the option to enable auto-suspend. Default is 60 seconds, I think.
