I've done some searching on other forums, and I have discovered that I am missing the file . ~/.fluxbox/bsetbg. I'm wondering why bsetbg can't create the file... When I check vc1, it has this:
~/.fluxbox/bsetbg was not found: creating...
bsetbg: checking for display... not found
bsetbg: checking for Esetroot... not found
bsetbg: checking for wmsetbg... not found
etc.
I also checked ~/.fluxbox/init and added bsetbg to line 74 (rootCommand: )
Strange...

Are you using the devel version? In that case, it's been changed to
fbsetbg. (It's in their devel faq, but both Dusty and I missed it--I forget which one of us found it and posted it later, I just remember we both mentioned it.).
Heh, didn't read your post thoroughly enough, I missed the point. I'll leave the above paragraph in, as it will probably come up sooner or later on the forums.
As for the other issue--fluxbox requires some sort of image program to display the image--if you have eterm, it can use esetroot, if you have windowmaker it can use wmsetbg.
You can also install something else to do it, such as ImageMagik, qiv or xli. I have a page on fluxbox at
http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/fluxbox.html
that covers this.

Thanks very much for the kind words. Glad it was helpful.
As I point out there, Gentoo and Arch are the only ones that I know of that incorporate Mr. Kita's patch.
