Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

Hello everyone!

I've been an Arch Linux user for a few hours now and have got it running quite nicely. I love Arch smile  I've configured my soundcard and installed GNOME. All works fine, however I can't change the refresh rate of my screen which is set to 50 herz.

I've got a Hanns G HW191D which is a TFT screen. So here's my question:

Is 50 herz enough (Someone told me the refresh rate doesn't matter if you have a TFT screen) or should I find a way of increasing it?

Thanks a lot in advance,

chell

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

You really sure it's 50Hz? I've heard TFTs only have two options, either 60Hz or 75Hz, where you would be stuck with 60Hz for DVI but D-Sub (VGA) should be able to switch between both.

Yes, I'm sure. So: Does it matter or should I try to increase it?

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

use whatever the optimal refresh rate is for your lcd.
Mine, for instance, supports 75hz, but claims that 60hz is the optimal refresh rate.

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

You'll find that most LCD panels have an optimal refresh rate of 60Hz. Using anything else could mean tearing or display abnormalities in the display.

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

I'm not sure if this is what happened to the OP or not, but I'm having a similar problem.

Well, I'm not sure if it's a problem. See I think people on here are right, most LCDs are optimal at 60hz. I just configured KDE on my arch system and The only two options I have are 50 and 55 hz.

I have the latest (the most current in pacman anyway...) nvidia driver installed for my georce 7800gt and the display is my brand new samsung 204bw.

Anyone know how I can get it to 60? I dunno if it matters, but it sure is bugging me.

Thanks!

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

Go to your Xorg configuration file at /etc/X11/ and open it as root. Find the section named Monitor. In there will be two line called HorizSync and VertRefresh. If not, add them and adjust them to sensible values like this:

HorizSync 43.0 - 68.0
VertRefresh 60.0 - 60.0

I don't know what the NVidia proprietary driver does to your xorg.conf, but on any sane X-Window setup this WILL force your monitor to 60Hz.

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

I just configured KDE on my arch system and The only two options I have are 50 and 55 hz.

It's an X bug, causing to display wrong Hz in applications (like kcontrol, or gnome's setting dialog). Try to look at your monitor's OSD menu for "display info" or similiar. There u'll find the correct Hz that is used. Mine e.g. is running at 75 Hz, which is also the preferred for it, but configuring it by a GUI always shows 50Hz.

deTTo,

You're totally right, 60hz according to the monitor.

I really appreciate the info, was making me batty!

So true.. I always check my monitor's OSD menu to check the refresh rates (be it CRT or LCD).  Why let the software tell you when the monitor knows for sure wink

Re: Does my TFTs refresh rate matter?

But how to check the notebooks flat panel refresh rate? I have Lenovo C200 notebook.
When I'm moving a white cursor on a light colored web page I can't see it, on the LCD connected to VGA in the same time I can see the cursor clearly. Maybe the Lenovo's flat panel is not so good?
