why does arch use the old i810 driver instead of the new intel driver

AFAIK xf86-video-i810 was replaced by xf86-video-intel

xf86-video-i810-1.7.4.tar.bz2 was released 09-Jan-2007
xf86-video-intel-1.9.91.tar.bz2 was released 04-Mar-2007
xf86-video-intel-1.9.94.tar.bz2 was released 03-Apr-2007

as the old i810 driver fails to set colors in xv properly on intel 945g perhaps this driver might help

Re: why does arch use the old i810 driver instead of the new intel driver

The 1.9.9x versions are in-development release candidates for 2.0 and official Arch packaging tends to stick to the more stable side of the street. To compile it needs in-development xorg-server source. There is a thread on this bbs about how to compile it yourself. One place to keep an eye on the development is over at the xorg mailing list (here's the RC4 release annoucement http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/x … 23186.html ).

cheers
