External monitor (CRT) resolution autodetecion by nvidia

Hi,
When I connect an external monitor (CRT) to my laptop while X Server running, nvidia-settings finds my external monitor but the resolution detected is preaty crapy.

When I generate xorg.conf and modify it by changing:

Option         "metamodes" "DFP: 1680x1050 +0+0, CRT: nvidia-auto-select +1680+0"

to:

Option         "metamodes" "DFP: 1680x1050 +0+0, CRT: 1024x768 +0+0"

It works, but only when I startx with external monitor connected.
Is there a way to force nvidia-settings to detect better resolutions? Or to let one self modify it without restarting X.

Peace.
