Gnome-main-menu is nice, but have you seen the knock off the Ubuntu guys made called USP (Ubuntu System Panel)? I prefer the layout of the USP menu because it doesn't require a second window to be opened just to browse your applications. I'd be curious if you could get it to work, me and another Arch user made a pkgbuild for it, but it was kind of buggy.

Good work and thanks, I'm using gnome-main-menu right now.
USP is nice indeed, though it uses a bit more of your CPU.
I once had it running stable on Arch (which was in november ), but lost the PKGBUILD and the patches over the last months (hehe). I do have a screenshot though http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/1628/screenshotzv8.png
This was of course usp1 at that time. Are you looking for the 'good old' usp1, or more for the 'forever in alpha' ups2 ? I may want to give it a shot, it should not be that hard, at least it was not for usp1.

okay it is running
I will do some quick additional patches to get rid of some U specific buttons (and change some of them which are pointing to the wrong location)

there you go. the initial port is finished. There may or may not be things that do not work or work as expected. Please tell me what you like/don't like, or like to see changed. I may (or may not ) change things in later versions. If you want to be sure things get done, feel free to help and contact me.
Anyway, you can find it at http://pressh.archlinux.googlepages.com

It seems like it isn't inside 2.18

If people are still interested in gnome-main-menu, I found some time to update my old PKGBUILDS and they are now available from the AUR
