Disable monitor

Hello,
After trying to get supertux working earlier just for fun, it took me a fair while to find out that dri doesnt work with the open source ati drivers and dual screens.

So this got me wondering, is there anyway to disable one of the monitor outputs without having to restart xorg?

At the moment i have to kill x then copy the single head config over and startx again before i can play games, then reverse the process when ive finished.

Is there anyway round this?
(Apart from using the proprietary drivers )
