StartX error - Screen not present or similar (0.6 issue)

Ciao to all.

Yesterday I have installed the 0.6 issue of arch.
All OK during the installation process (fast and simple to do), but when I reboot and I try "startX", the system stop it with the following EE error: "screens not present.." or similar.

My desktop is a Pentium III (Acer Aspire).

Can you help me?
Where is my mistake?

Thanks.

Ciao.
Luca

can you provide a little more info?
have you set up your xf86config and .xinitrc?
which de/wm are you trying to start?

Re: StartX error - Screen not present or similar (0.6 issue)

Thanks robot5x,

this afternoon at home I will try to give you more info.  Now I am in office.

I don't have set up the xf86config and .xinitrc.
Where can I try these two files?

I try to start startX command, not any de/wm (windowmaker I suppose).

Sorry for my little info.

This afternoon after my weekly soccer game I will try again.

Ciao.
Luca.

I have a similar(same?) problem. I think the problem is really just that I don't know how to configure X.

try with /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86cfg -textmode
as root

And where were all the sportsmen who always pulled you though?
They're all resting down in Cornwall
writing up their memoirs for a paper-back edition
of the Boy Scout Manual.

Re: StartX error - Screen not present or similar (0.6 issue)

That was exactly what I was looking for, thanks ^.^ I've got Mozilla running in IceWM now - the mouse scroll wheel isn't working yet, but I think I've found the info to fix that. I'm still a relative newcomer(my brother put on some version of Debian back in like 1995 but I never seriously learned how to use more than basic shell commands and so I waited until I got a CD burner the other weekend to start) so it took a while to figure out how to configure things for myself, and how to use pacman(the action-then-option notation really confused me) but I think I'll be a happy Arch user now. This is my first Linux install where I actually know most of how I've set it up, and where I'm not worried about breaking the original install by e.g. trying to install from the Debian source tree on a Debian derivative.

Lots more finding things I need to install ahead though *sigh* at least the install itself'll be easy.

You can try to download also hwd and have it generating a x config file for you
http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/hwd.html
There is an arch package ready to install
http://amlug.net/new-projects/hwd/packa … pkg.tar.gz
