Graphical errors

I get some weird graphical errors in KDE and I'm not sure why.

This was taken when I tried to listen to an mp3 in noatun.
When I switch desktops, most of the artifacts are gone.
Any idea what might cause this?

Re: Graphical errors

Usually artifacts like those manifest themself when the graphics cards is overheating, but since you said most of them disappear after switching desktops it might be some bug in the graphics driver instead. I would advise to check the cards cooling just to make sure the fan hasn't died (if it's active cooled that is).

Re: Graphical errors

I checked the fan and it's spinning.
It certainly isn't the coolest system, but far from overheating.
I actually cleaned it last week, prior to installing Arch.
It ran Debian before I switched to Arch and there were no such artifacts.

Re: Graphical errors

What Graphic Card and what driver are you using?
how is your screen with lower setting?
Next Monitor, check the xorg.conf if you got the right HorizSync, VertRefresh and screen Depth settings!

Re: Graphical errors

I have a Sapphire ATI RadeOn 9800 Pro 128MB and use the ati-fglrx 8.35.5 drivers.
(Un)fortunately, I can't seem to reproduce the error today.
Yesterday I could reproduce it as often as I wanted, even after rebooting.
I don't know much about how to set up the xorg.conf properly, tried my best,
so if there are mistakes, please enlighten me.

Re: Graphical errors

I'm getting the errors again, so that's not too great.
At least I can report that the errors happen on 1280x1024, 1024x768 and 800x600.
Didn't test 640x480. Any idea?
Also, is there a site which lists well-supported, current hardware
so I can look around if I must buy a new PC ?

Re: Graphical errors

I've had such artifacts from damaged hardware. Try lowering your refresh rate (eg 75 instead of 85 hz) and see if that helps any. You could of course also try the open source "radeon" driver, if your card is supported that is.
