well you could go and put the renice command into 'session' if you use GDM. or any autostart stuff if not

Running X reniced as -10 is actually broken with 2.6 kernels and nowadays schedulers. With 2.4 kernels this solution was quite normal, but with recent 2.6 kernels this "fix" does more harm than good.

I'm using the sd patch by con kolivas, with which is recomended to renice X to -10

is that included by default, kernel26ck? in that case i think i'll do the same.

nope. SD is a brand new scheduler, which is not included in standard ck patchset yet. I've compiled my kernel on my own (actually, i've always compiled my kernel on my own... but you got the point wink) You can find the patch for the 2.6.10.5 on ck.kolivas.org if you're intersted

By the way. I've added this line:

/usr/bin/renice -10 `pidof X`

at the bottom of my /opt/gnome/etc/gdm/Init/Default script (just upon the "exit 0") and it worked fine wink

Re: [solved] Running a "niced" X server within gdm

runing X with nice -10 (cfs) and kde
patch kernel sources with patches from here (cfs) from here:
http://kamikaze.waninkoko.info/patches/ … roken-out/
sched-cfs-v2.6.21-v16.patch
sched-cfs-v2.6.21-v16-boost.patch
sched-cfs-v2.6.21-v16-boost-tunables.patch
in the above order

or get patches from Ingo's server directly.
same goes with Kolivas patches (from his site), or here:
http://vipernicus.org/files/patches/2.6 … roken-out/
2.6.21-sd-0.48-boost.patch
2.6.21-sd-0.48-boost-tunable.patch

you can change nice value with sysctl (if you activate sysctl option in the kernel) later (default is -10, you may try -19 or custom)
