linux 2.6.20 issues

Somewhere in the making of this kernel things went awry. Now almost every livecd/install disk from every distro I use craps out with a kernel panic. The same cd seem to work fine in qemu/vmware but somehow they sstop working on my actual computer. All my drives are ide. I have 3. The are setup like this:

hda- 3 partions Arch (10gb) ubuntu edgy (25gb) swap 1gb hdb vfat (66 gb) debian etch 5 gb Ubuntu Feisty 3gb (I like to test what's new in ubuntu hdc windows xp 20gb nothing else.

Now I am not sure why but every time I try and boot into a live/regular cd I get an error. Usually something about sis and then kernel sync error panic or something. Or a  modprobe error. Or Cannot find /dev/root.

This happens cross distro. The exceptions are. Feisty beta cd which works. Yet somehow my Feisty install does not work on the "newer kernels." even the same kernel that is on the feisty beta won't work.

Arch Voodoo .8 has the kernel panic problem I speak of. BUT if I type ide-legacy it works. Anyone know what this might be and what I can do to fix it?

It's hardware problem, not kernel's. For example - my laptop doesn't work with >2.6.20.3

Re: linux 2.6.20 issues

Please post your hardware setup: Mainboard, PCI Cards etc.
If it is possible, please post the output of lspci, too.

I am not home now so I cannot post the lspci information but as soon as I get home I will. How can I find out which Mainboard I have? Currently

my PCI cards are
a Dlink madwifi card (Gl-something or other I'll check that too).
soundblaster sound card. (my module is snd_ens_1371 I believe)

Pentium 4 1.7 ghz
512 mb ram (two sticks both kingston pc2100)

3 harddrives as stated up. one is a maxtor (20gb) the other is a generic (40 gb) and the thrid is one I pulled from an e machines comp (80gb)

also a cdrw/dvd-rom drive also from an emachines comp.

I also have linksys wusb54g version 4. (rt2500usb is the core).  Sometimes I have that connected to the computer, it has no impact on anything.

Is it possible that my partitions are causing problems? (if my vfat partition was corrupted or something?)
What would the change to the new pata stack do  to break a live-cd? The don't really depend on harddisks, unless they are using my swap partition. It's a very interesting problem and has cost me many cds.

Why not? Are you saying the hardware is no longer supported? I was told that they removed the drivers for several ide devices from the vmlinuz of many kernels and this is the main reason behind that. (Wait a minute, maybe the is the problem, the kernel doesn't have support for my ide cdrom and as a result the kernel fails....hmm is that possible?)

Because my laptop is HP. It sucks much more than most vacuum cleaners do
