nv vs nvidia-71xx

Hi all,

I installed Arch 0.8 through ftp yesterday and almost everything is working out just fine on my old pc. It's a AMD 1 GHz with 256MB RAM and a GeForce256, which I used flawlessly with the nv-driver. Since I wanted to try out beryl (I know, it's a long shot to be running fluidly with that ancient card), I installed the nvidia-71xx-package and followed the instructions in the wiki. Now I have to choose:

1. nv-driver with full resolution (1280x1024, 24bit), no DRI
2. nvidia-71xx with up to 800x600 (even at 16bit color) and DRI.

Of course I would like to have both DRI and full res - is there anything I can do?

Are you absolutely sure your /etc/xorg.conf is ok?
You did list all resolutions you want to be able to use in the "Screens" section for the (nvidia-driver powered) video device?

Maybe you can post your xorg.conf here?

the driver itself should work at higher resolutions. I`ve got an old Riva TNT running at 1280*960.

My xorg.conf is on another computer (at home), so I cannot post it right now - I'll do it tonight. But: with the nv-driver the resolution is fine, and I change only these three lines (out of my head):

- MODULES SECTION: <uncomment> Load dri
- DEVICES SECTION: change driver 'nv' to 'nvidia'
- SERVER SECTION: <uncomment> section dri - 0666 - endsection

My xorg.conf is autogenerated with xorgconfig, and I have not encountered any problems (tho I have not checked the logs, yet).

In the screens-section I have 8 - 16 and 24bit (24 as default) and these resolutions 640 - 800 - 1024 - 1280 (all with viewport 0 0).

But, like I said, I'll be posting my xorg.conf and perhaps some errors from the log.

Ok,

In the Modules section, leave "load dri" commented and uncomment "load glx"
You can also leave Section Dri commented.

Be sure to add your user to the "video" group.

Also, if you want to experiment with beryl, add

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

to the nvidia part of the devices section. (Be sure to check the nvidia readme about the actual name of this option, as i didn't double check if the name is correct... I'm lazy, I know wink )

Problem solved!

I added Horizsync en VertRefresh-values for my monitor, as well as the option "dpms", and now I enjoy full res! The log shows more warnings than ever: all except one are warnings for resolutions that are too wide or out of sync...

One warning remains, and it says that the option "AddARGBGLXVisuals is not used" - I'll search for it, maybe i should spell it differently.

That may be an option in the newer drivers.... maybe it's not in the 7xxx series...
