no bash prompt in vt w/kernel 2.6.4

When I get into X and then open an aterm (xterm won't even open up), there is no bash prompt and I can't execute commands.  Anybody have a clue?

stock kernel or compiled?

Do you have a line like this in fstab:

none                   /dev/pts      devpts    defaults            0      0

Compiled, but with hardly any unique options chosen.  I'll give it a look when I get back.
