GNOME 2.18 locks up!

Hi guys! This is my first message in this forum. Yesterday I've installed Archlinux 0.8 on my laptop and I have to say it's amazing!!! cool

It fully works and I had no problem until I decided to install "ntfs-3g" to read my USB pen (formatted with Windows Vista). I added my user to the "storage" group since it gave me an error. After installing NTFS-3g everytime I start a new GNOME session either from GDM or the terminal, GNOME locks up during startup! sad

I think the problem is caused by GNOME-VFS and FUSE not working togheter really good. Did someone have the same problem? I had to remove FUSE and NTFS-3g from my system to make it works again. hmm

Thank you for this great distro! big_smile

Re: GNOME 2.18 locks up!

Glad you found Arch smile

Your issue is eaither related to gnome or your Kernel. I have been using ntfs-3g with KDE/hal to automatically mount my NTFS USB drive for quite a while. However I am using the latest beyond kernel which is version 2.6.19. If you have recently installed the stock kernel then you are using kernel 2.6.20. It may be worth a shot to tryout the older kernel. You can tryout the beyond Kernel from the extra repo:

pacman -S kernel26beyond

Re: GNOME 2.18 locks up!

Unfortunately, I HAVE to use the stock kernel since my laptop has a issue with kernel 2.6 which has been corrected since version 2.6.20.3. Beyond Kernel, which I used for a while on a Gentoo box, didn't reach yet that version so... no way.

However with NTFS kernel module everything runs fine but, of course, I can't mount those devices for writing. sad

Re: GNOME 2.18 locks up!

GNOME + ntfs-3g runs perfectly here.

I mount my external USB drive (NTFS formatted by Vista) where I store my music everyday and I don't have any lockups. Maybe it is an issue with your hardware.

BTW why did your formatted your USB drive with NTFS? usually I leave my pen drives as FAT.

Re: GNOME 2.18 locks up!

why did your formatted your USB drive with NTFS?

Because Windows OneLive Care only uses NTFS volumes as backup stores...

However I cleaned up my home directory and the problem seems gone.

Thanks for your help!

Re: GNOME 2.18 locks up!

I finally found out what's the real cause that leads GNOME to lock up during startup: GNOME sounds. When I enable them and after the splash screen, I listen the typical (ugly) GNOME welcome sound, then it shows me the two panels and then it freezes. Deleting the ~/.gconf/gnome/sound directory and after a reboot, everything works again.

Some question: do I need to install esound separately from main GNOME installation? Do I need to start it as a daemon? Do I need to configure it?

Thanks again. I renamed the thread because the problem is still the same... wink
