TotalSize of all installedpackages

What command will display the full size of all packages installed in my system?

What command will display the size of a selected package?

Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

no problem about looonnngggg books, as i read about 50-100 pages/day in regular :-)

is this the roman from tolstoj you mean i mean you speak about? - i read a translation in german (as i dont know russian) and it is written in a really high level --- but i never heard of a movie about it ... but i will have a look at the library for movies to check it (most movies are worse than the original book (lord of the ?ings), but i never give up hope)

what i meant is: if you would scan each page as image to the computer, you would come also to a lot of MB's of images

Re: TotalSize of all installedpackages

BTW: new pacman has nice new options:

SYNC OPTIONS
       -c, --clean
Remove old packages from the cache.  When pacman downloads pack-
ages, it saves them in /var/cache/pacman/pkg.  If  you  need  to
free  up  diskspace,  you can remove these packages by using the
--clean option.  Using one --clean  (or  -c)  switch  will  only
remove  old  packages.  Use it twice to remove all packages from
              the cache.

This helps with cleaning package cache and freeing some space. So now pacman -Sc deletes only old packages and pacman -Scc deletes all of them from the cache.

Re: TotalSize of all installedpackages

Purpose was to determine how much I would lose if I actually made a LIVECD.

it's always an optimization ... i use amlug or knoppix, where i should work and no linux is installed / may not be installed ... this is great, if you do not want to use the harddrive on a computer and the OS it has

other thing is to bugfix a broken installation

... but in my eyes, lifeOS is not great for daily work, if there is other option to install the OS to hdd

Re: TotalSize of all installedpackages

My intent is to utilize ramfs and 4G highmem to increase the capability of LIVE CD to utilize up to 4G of free ram.  This is possible with 2.6.5 with those elements enabled and with 4G of ram.  Less than 4G is ok too.

With usb 2.0 enabled as well, hotplug of HDD is also useable and so is printer when needed.

Voila! No hdd running all day!!!!

great plans!

i heard that highmem has (had?) some conflicts with (c)loop devices --- i'm not expert in this, only heard this somewhere on news (slashdot? kerneltrap? dont know)

the thing with lifeCD is that the CD is always slower than a hdd or other device --- but if your lifeOS runs from a usb-chip, then problem solved

good luck in making the terminal of the future!!

Re: TotalSize of all installedpackages

Much obliged for the comments.

Don't know how to get LiveCd to play from USB ....Mobo can't see it to boot.

Haven't heard about the highmen problem.  While operating in ram, the speed of the execution has to be high.  Granted, CD speed is limited by the IR optical  reader system.

The journey starts with the first step, getting the kernel installed and modified in the livecd along with the desired progs.  Determine at that time how well the highmem performs with a second CD for data entry into ram, and so on and so forth.

Blue laser might provide faster CD rom but dunno if it would be legacy compatible.

Some livecds aren't too shabby and certainly with highmem would become versatile.  Only use the HDD via USB when needed as well as the printer.  Lower power needs.  Some good comes from it.

I expect soon to have a try at it on another OS.

My present kernel is modified for highmem and in ramfs I have 1536 MB useable which is more than enough for .vob segments.  This means I don't need compression packages.

A pipe dream for LIVECD so far but still have hopes to do something with it.
