K3b Question.

Hi guys,

I've just installed K3b for burning my CD's and DVD's but when i boot i get 1 system message;

cdrdao will be run without root privileges
It is highly recommended to configure cdrdao to run with root privileges to increase the overall stability of the burning process.

I'd like to set the root permissions for cdrdao but how?

I dont seem to have that option.

Only have Configure K3b, but when i open that, i cant select the option to enter/enable root usage.

k3b setup has been removed. all should work without that. just make sure your user is in the right group.

Which would be? Optical? Because it still gives me the system message, and i would hate for my DVD burning to stall...

The reason why k3b gives this "error" is because it won't run cdrdao with realtime permissions. This means that cdrdao doesn't get all the attention from the system it wants at any time, and could lead to buffer underruns. If you want to get rid of this warning, check the mark that tells "don't notify me about this problem", or chmod 4755 /usr/bin/cdrdao.
Running cdrdao is not needed at all IMHO. In the case you'll get buffer underruns, realtime scheduling can't help it either, because on modern systems it's usually the harddisk that runs into problems, not the CPU (and burning some raw stream to a DVD/CD device with DMA enabled doesn't eat any CPU at all in my experience).

I removed k3bsetup because I don't think a KDE application should ever touch important files on your system not owned by the application itself. When you're in the optical group, CD and DVD burning should work without any issues, which renders k3bsetup useless.

You can just burn any CD and/or DVD and do something in the meanwhile. Your CD/DVD has burnproof or something compatible with that, so your CD/DVD won't fail. If you don't want to trigger the usage of burnproof, you should avoid stressing the harddisk while burning CD/DVD.
