XDM wont let me in - bad username

I just installed xdm on my computer. I changed to runlevel 5 in inittab and xdm starts fine. But when i try to log in, i'm thrown out again immediately. I found this in a log:

Apr 18 17:33:10 COMPUTER xdm(pam_unix)[4692]: session opened for user h by (uid=0)
Apr 18 17:33:10 COMPUTER xdm(pam_unix)[4692]: session closed for user h
Apr 18 17:50:04 COMPUTER xdm(pam_unix)[4723]: session opened for user h by (uid=0)
Apr 18 17:50:04 COMPUTER xdm(pam_unix)[4723]: session closed for user h
Apr 18 17:32:22 COMPUTER xdm(pam_unix)[4692]: bad username [

what's the user name, and are you sure it has no non-alphanumeric characters in there (whne you type it) ?

..
i don't think there should be an issue of the name beign too short, but u never know.

i tried with a longer username and still the same problem

I installed gdm instead. Worked fine.
