kdemod is beautiful.

Yeah, I tried it today, its really wonderful !!
Why isn't it adopted as Official Archlinux KDE (I mean the whole package-set) !!
It makes perfect sense to me as its fairly well-tested (I guess,  as many people are using it...) and PKGBUILDs etc. are thusly available.

And if its brought into "testing repo", it will get more profound scrutiny.

Also, this would make Arches KDE somewhat comparable to Gentoo's KDE (I mean more choices for inclusion or exclusion of individual packages) !!

It is an integral part of the Arch-Philosophy to include the lates upstream-software. That means that they try to include THE sources with almost no modifications (except some patches to make software run in special environments and bug fixes / security fixes). So, kernel26 will always be as vanilla as possible, directly from kernel.org and the official KDE- and Gnome-Packages will always be as near as possible to the official sources.

Taking KDE-mod instead would
1. violate that philosophy.
2. make KDE-mod more important than it was intended to be.

Let's just keep it that way that KDE-mod is perfect for some people, but not for all. Let's keep it optional.

Hmm. right, got the point now !!

BTW after a few months KDE4 is going to be out, and I hear that they are really looking into _cleansing_ duplicated functionality (i.e. Programs that nearly do the same job) out of KDE along with other improvements off course.

But again, even in KDE4, if I only need "kpdf2" why do I have to install all of the kdegraphics packages.

Solution:
==> Use my own PKGBUILDS
==> Ask this kdemod guy to make it cholesterol-free i.e. strip off any extra stuff from it, and add it to community. This would save him those web-hostings costs too (as its hosted separately for now)

Its great after all to have just what you need & nothing extra !!

Well, beside the splitted packages, KDEmod ist more a playground for new stuff like Kickoff for example. So i dont think that it really fits into Archs repos, and it also follows a different philosophy. While the official KDE packages provide a stable and proved version that follows the arch way, KDEmod is more for the KDE enthusiasts who want to have some more experimental/unofficial stuff and more control over their installation.

There were some ideas before to put this into AUR, but i think that providing ready-to-use packages on an external server is the way to go... Just imagine you have to download masses of PKGBUILDs to build and install it.

About the hosting costs: I have unlimited bandwidth available, and i dont have to pay for it. So the hosting is no problem, and i doubt that there will be problems with it at any time. The server is quite powerful and handles the load quite well, the repo generates about 100GB traffic per month now, for example, and its really no problem :)

Wow, I must say I'm impressed. I had glanced over the website once or twice, but I just looked through the list of packages for the first time. That is a lot of work! Fantastic work by the team. I am super tempted to install the 64bit version of it, but I am quite comfortable at the moment in the simple setup I have right now. Maybe later on though

Doubtlessly - KDEmod is probably the best KDE version out there one can get for one's distribution. I do not care whether it is included in the Arch repositories or not (I do support the opinon of mucknert), as long as it will be available for me and my machines running Arch Linux. It improves the experience of using this distribution significantly.

One cannot thank you guys enough who maintain KDEmod.

I extremely appreciate your work.

Yeah, it surely is a better idea to provide pre-built packages instead of putting them in to AUR, as funkyou rightly explained...

As a token of my gratitude to your (funkyou & company) work though, I am with your permission, putting your signature into mine, at least for a few months

Well, all we got finished in kde4 right now are the kdelibs. And even there, it's not sure the current API interface will stay the same.
The guys are heading for the 23rd of October as a release date, but i wouldn't expect KDE4 to be released before November or December 2007 to be honest.

I just love KDEMod. It's feels even more responsive than fully optimized KDE (on gentoo) or XFCE4.
