I've ever said here, one or two of the reasons that make me select arch as my distro. So, here they are. Sorry by my english. It's not too good for writing.
I never was a person of trying distros, so, my knowledge about them was, basically poor. But, i must said, that i knew exactly what i wanted, as, this is one of the advantage of "Linux from scratch", what i used over 2 years.
So, i began looking for my distro. What i make, wasn't installing it and proving it. No. What i did was going to the web page of each distro and look for two things:
1- A quick manual or similar: The installation of distros is moreless quite similar. I didn't want to see a 156 pages manual describing the installation process. What i wanted was to know how manage the system, once installed.
2- Software. I wanted stables version of them, and in "oficial" repos. I didn't want to use "testing" or "unstable" repos.
Sometimes, there were a lot of manuals. Almost of them, 200 pages explaing how install it. But, it's not normal to find something like "post install manual". another times, didn't find the software list.
But, one day, i find arch: In 20 seconds, i found the link to the manual, and the link to search for the versions of the software that i wanted. Over 20 minutes, i realized that the versions in current and extra were the latest, the ones that i wanted. And, the ones not included in them, were in AUR. First step sucess. The next 15 minutes, read the manual, and knew how to do, what i wanted. So i installed it, and, in moreless 90 minutes, i had linux as i wanted.
So, from here, i want to say thanks to the people that made the web page and the manual (and arch, and AUR, and... too ;-). They are so easy, simple and intuitive that make me know that arch would be my distro before installing it.
PD1: Well, searching pkg in AUR was almost perfect, until i realized (once installed arch) the diference between community, unsuported... ;-)

It's really the best distro I've ever seen. Having said that, I must also say I love Archlinux because it suits both my needs and philosophy towards what I think a Linux distro should be... KISS!
I also rank the Ubuntu project above the average as it builds a nice user friendly layer on top of Debian which I once loved to use, but I would never use it as my primary system as I really like to understand the bolts and nuts of my distro keeping everything under my control.
Some users want easiness therefore they'll use something like Ubuntu whereas others want power therefore they'll use something like Archlinux. Some others want power and painful upgrades therefore they'll use Gentoo. ![]()
I usually describe Archlinux as a painless LFS.

I totally hate this distro, very arrogant developers and awfull bsd init scripts no humor in the boards at all...
Only reason im staying is that i've put too much time into tweaking this and Mrgreen is funny.
(and now everything works and fast
)
so ty for this endless piece of tweaking machine they call arch ^^

It would seem you're joking, here. But if you're serious, I've found that "arrogant developers" often means "pretty darn savvy developers". Also, I don't know if phrakture or dtw are yet fully part of the development team, but they both make this place. I feel, on occasion, I've been put in my place by one or the other. Could choose to cry "arrogant" or, instead, acknowledge, "that was pretty ignorant of me" -- just a matter of perspective.
It used to be a lot better around here, though -- back when sarah31 would put phrak and dtw in *their* place ;-) Fun to watch.
Mr. Green is still funny.

Yeah I was joking, I love this distro ![]()
I just wish I knew how "standard compliant" this is, ie how well does things learned here transfer to other distros and linux in general. BSD and MacOSX are like red cape to a linux fanboy like me ^^
what happened to that Sarah (woman?) anyways? Lil' womans touch would do no harm ^^

Ehmm... check their ranks against any of their posts. ![]()
I would just like to say that I LOVE this thread, and that I (and the rest of them, I expect, but I'll let them speak for themselves) love doing it as much as you guys seem to love using it.

After a couple of flings with this distribution's and then running away, I find myself back here again and this time I am starting see how brightly she shines. I completely agree with dienadel about the layout of the website and how logically it is structured. The tab set up to take you anywhere, clear documentation (guides, wiki). But, one thing that demonstrated the difference was when I submitted a feature request to bring back HPOJ package as my motherboard does not play nicely with HPLIP and scanning never works. After a few weeks and a couple of posts, it was agreed and the package was back. Now I have scanner working and a fully functional Arch system.
Big thanks to the all the arrogant, stuck up guys and girls behind this distribution. She is unique and ahead and may she remain that way.
