Do that as root or add the user you want to burn with to the group 'optical'.

Enable dma with hdparm -d1 /dev/cdrom
or whatever your device's device name is.

Possibly this problem which I've found on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn as well (tried it out, still prefer Arch) ; the new IDE quasi-SCSI drivers which seem to have appeared in 2.6.20 do not always play well with burning.

Might be worth trying reverting to the old IDE system (see post) see if it works there. For me, went from 90% coasters to perfect.
