Re: The perfect desktop

Are we posting killer apps, or just tools we use daily?

screen, vim, weechat, more, bash, htop, mutt-ng are all in daily use by myself.

Re: The perfect desktop

my perfect desktop is kde + beryl (and sometimes fvwm):

terminal: konsole (because of the new-tab-button, no other terminal seems to have it)
filemanager: konqueror (kio slaves, i use it for ssh and ftp)
browser: opera with mplayer-plugin (that may change with kde4)
mail: kmail
instant messenger: psi (smaller and cleaner than kopete)
irc: konversation
ftp: kftpgrabber (for fat uploads, has some very nice options like bandwidth restrictions)
downloads: kget
audio-player: amarok and xmms (still)
audio-tagger: kid3 (small and powerful)
graphics: GIMPshop
video-playing: kaffeine and mplayer
bittorrent: ktorrent
editor: kate
office: openoffice (i need to exchange .doc files, otherwise i would use koffice)
archives: ark
search: strigi (very fast, lightweight and good kde integration)

terminal apps i use often:
ssh
screen
mc
vim
svn
elinks
wget
ncftp
less
more
tac

want a modular and tweaked KDE for arch? try kdemod

Re: The perfect desktop

Hm let me think:
- Konsole (for just everything)
- Kopete
- Skype
- XChat
- Gimp (and go away with GimpShop... don't find anything in Photoshop either *g*)
- Konqueror (for almost all Websites, sometimes even for file browsing, KIO etc.)
- Firefox (only for ebay and some odd other sites)
- KShutdown
- Amarok
- Akregator
- Kdevelop
- Kate
- Kmail + GPG plugin
- Kaffeine
- TV time
- Scribus
- Inkscape

On Terminal:
- mc (Midnight commander, with that you're fast as hell in file management)
- gcc
- make
- tar
- gzip
- 7za (from p7zip package)
- vi (emacs is just another operating system smile )
- elinks
- ssh
- wget / wput

Well... no Office Application you may ask, but I don't need one, just using scribus or plaintext files smile

Re: The perfect desktop

I wouldn't call it perfect by any means, but its the best I've come accross so far:

xfce4
thunar/thunar-volman
(g)vim
firefox
thunderbird
skype
gaim
Azureus
galculator
graveman
xarchiver
cups
gqview
gimp
eclipse
audacious
mplayer
adobe reader
open office

those are the graphical things, for the cli I don't even know where to begin, so I won't

Re: The perfect desktop

WM: Openbox
Browser: Firefox/Swiftfox (although there is not such a thing as a perfect browser)
Terminal: urxvt (konsole when in kde)
Mail: Mutt all the way
Newsgroup: Slrn
File Manager: ROX-Filer/Thunar/Konqueror (I can't decide which of these I like more, each one has something that the others haven't)
Editor: Vim
IM: Kopete
P2P/Torrent: rtorrent
P2P/edonkey: aMule/mldonkey
irc: konversation (switching to weechat...)
audio player: amarok
id3 tagger: Easytag
video player: mplayer
Office: Openoffice
pdf reader: Kpdf
image viewer: kuickshow/feh
image editor: Gimp

for all the rest, I use simple terminal commands as bzip2, unrar, ftp, wget etc.

To get something done, a committee should consist of no more than three persons, two of them absent.

Re: The perfect desktop

Ranked by order of importance:

Sanity: beer/coffee
Term: gnome-terminal/PuTTY ('Doze)
Connectivity: ssh
Multiplexer: screen
Text editor: vim
wm: wmii
Browser: firefox
Music player: cmus
Music getter: rtorrent
IRC: irssi
AIM: gaim
pr0n: mplayer
www: apache
db: mysql
word processing: LaTeX

I have intentionally left languages off of this list, as they are not really part of the desktop so much as they are part of higher order stateless abstractions. Plus there are too many to name!
