Automatic backup of text files on save

KDE has a feature that when you're working on a text file with KWrite/Kate, and hit save, it automatically creates a backup file in the current directory. Is it possible to add this functionality to other text editors like Scite?

Use gvim.

It has automatic backup handling ( of course you have to tweak your ~/.gvimrc )
