ACPI and sluggish system

Hey there. I am having some probs with my laptop and apparently the ACPI system. It seems that when I have ACPI enabled and after trying any possible module combination, loading/unloading/blacklisting, my system freezes every 1-2" then works again, then again... I tried to boot with acpi=off and my system was working significantly faster, hard disk read/write and all, but of course no battery status or Fn keys working. This is a rather frustrating situation I am facing here, so, any kind of help/idea might prove useful. For those who like to "dig" more into the prob, I provide also my dmesg when loading ACPI. have you loaded acpi modules like fan? if it's not loaded, maybe when acpi is enabled the fan does not comes up, and the cpu relies on passive cooling (ie throttling, that it it just skips a lot of cycles doing idle calls voluntarily until it has cooled down => big slow down). if you don't load acpi at all that would be handled by the bios.
try to cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/* (with acpi enabled of course)

Like I mentioned before, I have tried all possible module combos and yes, fan is loaded the very now moment that I write this message. Still problem persists. Here is the output of cat:

You should have more than just one thermal zone. Depending on your kernelversion

cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ*/*

should list all details to all thermal zones. Also, install acpitools and provide the output of

acpi -V

wrong. I always had and still have only one (had various cpus among wich pentium m core duo and core 2 duo)

temperature:             79 C

first, this is really high. this should be around 50C
second, it indicates 'cooling mode' is 'passive'. it should read 'active' when fan is in range of use. passive denotes throttling.
third, there should be an 'active' line describing when it triggers the fan and which device it affects (much like passive one).

see my output (from a core duo, but doesn't matter) for comparison:

$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/*
cooling mode:   active

state:                   ok
temperature:             46 C
critical (S5):           115 C

my conclusion is that (if enabled) acpi has troubles handling your fan, and thus reverts to passive cooling, while when disabling acpi, thermal management (incl. fan) is handled by the bios.
causes may vary, incl. buggy dsdt, modules not loading properly.

do you have a specific laptop brand, like asus, ibm, dell, or other? some have special acpi modules to be loaded.

To start with, this is a Sony Vaio VGN-FS215S we are talking about here. About the high temperature, not really sure to be honest, I was running World of Warcraft on Wine for 10', maybe this is why it was so high. Now, after leaving it 2-3h idle, with WoW running, it says 88 degrees. In my opinion this is quite high. What can I say more... Well, I remember about DSDT I had "disabled" it when I was installing Arch and it asked me if my kernel requires a specific DSDT or something similar. Also, regarding the brand/model of the laptop, the only specific module I have to load is sony_acpi in order my Fn keys to work. Nothing changes though if it is loaded or not. Anyway, do you think it is wise to revert to acpi=off till there is an actual solution to this in order to avoid harming my hardware due to high temperatures? Thank you in advance for all your answers.

indeed I was talking about idle temperatures. in-use temperatures are usually 65-80C, depending of cooling design efficiency (some laptops have really poor design, and tend to overheat).

as for using acpi=off for the time being, if that really makes the fanworking, I think this is wise (especially as your computer seems to have apm in the bios, which is acpi predecessor so at least you have some basic power management) since the lower the temperature, the longer the lifespan (esp. in the top 20C before the max admissible temp)

since there's no sensor available in apm mode, try to do some guesstimate comparisons like temperature you feel with your hand or with a thermometer near the cpu, at both idle and full load (during enough time to have a stable temperature). also, try to hear if the fan is actually spinnig or not (or behaves differently) when using acpi or not.

I don't have much to contribute, save that I'm also using a Sony FS-(something)  My fan is controlled by the BIOS, and it does run occasionally.

Ok, good to know. My experience is limited to IBM and HP laptops with various CPUs and chipsets and they all had more than one thermal zone, but admittedly, I don't know anything about Sony laptops. Maybe msid can post the output of

ls -l /proc/acpi
ls -l /proc/acpi/fan
ls -l /proc/acpi/thermal_zone

So that we get an idea what the kernel and the ACPI tables agreed upon.
