you might need to log out and back in, or reboot - sometimes that'll make it work.

That is because instead of putting a symlink that's pointing to firefox into /usr/bin or something, the package adds the firefox-directory containing the binary to your $PATH.
Long story, short answer:export your new path or simply log out and in again.
