I've tried everything to get one of my machines up after running pacman leading to a crash, and reboot that merely boots up kernel panics. Using a rescue CD and downgrading the kernel doesn't work (pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-...- tried 3 different ones). fstab is fine. Tried passing rootfstype=jfs via grub. Also ran jfs_fcsk to ensure the partition is in working mountable order. Still init fails and kernel panics.
What else could I possibly do to get this system up? Thanks for any help.

What message do you get when it panics?
Desktop: AMD Athlon64 3800+ Venice Core, 2GB PC3200, 2x160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 2x320GB WD Caviar RE, Nvidia 6600GT 256MB

kinit: Cannot open root device dev(0,0)
kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Following the broken bootloader wiki page seemed to work better when using pacman -U kernel...
