dvd device problems

Since last system upgrade, I have severe problems getting my dvd device to run. It is a sata device and it used to work before the update. The update involved among other things

[04/30/07 18:31] upgraded cdrkit (1.1.2-1 -> 1.1.4-1)
[04/30/07 18:32] upgraded dvd+rw-tools (7.0-1 -> 7.0-2)
[04/30/07 18:32] upgraded filesystem (0.8-2 -> 0.8-3)
[04/30/07 18:34] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.20.6-4 -> 2.6.20.10-1)

and the gnome upgrade from /opt to /usr which I don't suspect. I can't mount any dvd/cdrom as user neither as root. When I try it, I get some errors

isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16

and

Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0

cdrecord/wodim does not find any optical devices with cdrecord --devices and it seems, it ignores my /dev/srX devices. dvd+rw-mediainfo results in

:-( unable to INQUIRY: Input/output error

So, of cource, no graphical burning tool works with different errors.

I hope someone can at least push me in the right direction. I cannot find any difference from the configuration of the system before the upgrade, same modules are loaded and the new kernel packages seems not to differ in that way.

I can only say that I've experienced some problems with sr0 too and thus moved back to ide hook for my DVD-RW.

So what, the whole thing only a little bugger? After a reboot the most of the things above worked, demsg did not give any unusual result and mounting and buring worked. But then, blanking a dvd-rw  crashed the thing to its state above.

So, I need further investigation here.

@lucke: I know it is experimental software and I am aware of the resulting problems. But I just wondered about the behaviour because it used to work (and works). But thanks for your recommendation.

I have been having the same problem after the switch.

This is my dmesg when I try to mount the drive:

After the first time I got this error I restarted and successfully burned a cd, but now since I have not been able to mount the drive.

I've had the same problem as the OP. However, I've also crosschecked in Windows and the results are the same, the DVD simply wouldn't be recognized. I've tested about a dozen different media, so I'm guessing it's the hardware, not the software. If someone in this thread manages to get it working, will you please tell me.
I've also tested on a few LiveCDs (including a very recend release of PCLinuxOS) and the results are exactly the same.

EDIT:

I've got it working after I let my PC cool down. It's a hot summer here, so I gues the device simply overheated. I'm not sure why it read CDs but not DVDs. But it seems to work. I have my Arch box up 24/7, so it's no wonder it overheated.
